Sacred Music for men's voices conveys a sense of strength and nobility. I recall attending a service in the Alexandre Nevsky Orthodox Cathedral in Sofia, Bulgaria where I first heard echoes of a men's choir singing hymns to the Holy Virgin. Their sounds combined tenderness and power. I heard the power of faith and the gentleness of a genuine sacred attitude. It is a combination of both these qualities which is surprising to the ear. Most cultures of the world perpetuate the tradition of using men's voices as a persuasive tool to officiate in rituals that address higher powers. The low frequencies of male voices have the ability to penetrate matter and invade the atmosphere. This explains why Eastern religious orders such as Buddhism developed techniques of mantra incantation using very low and powerful chest sounds to impact on the singer as much as on the listener.
